Engaging Discussions Progress in the ‘’Toe Talatalanoa Overseas Program’’ in Canberra, Australia.

Nuku’alofa, Tonga – The Honourable Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Lord Tu’i’afitu and key officials from the ministry extended the Toe Talatalanoa Australia program to Canberra held on the 9th to 14th December 2023 following its success in Melbourne. The program in Canberra included insightful Talatalanoa sessions, crucial appointments, a radio talk back, and a visit to the Acting High Commissioner of Tonga to Australia.

  • Talatalanoa Session Highlights:
    • Discussions in Canberra Talatalanoa sessions raised vital concerns:
      • Reclamation of lands reverted to estate holders during COVID-19
      • Opportunities for Australian citizens to own land in Tonga
      • Lack of a clear communication system from MLNR, affecting updates
      • Challenges in lease payments from Australia due to reliability issues in Tonga
      • Utilizing High Commissions Office for land-related inquiries
      • Issues with land processes, procedures, and instructions for Tongans in Australia
      • Concerns regarding corruption within the ministry due to unlawful land allocation
  • Appointments:
    • 18 appointments were conducted, focusing on:
      • Follow-ups on submitted land applications
      • Status updates on family land, including tax and town allotments
      • Discussions on tax allotment arrangements
  • Other Engagements:
    • Radio Talk Back sessions and a visit to the Acting High Commissioner of Tonga to Australia were part of the program.
