Nuku’alofa, Tonga – The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources launched the ‘Toe Talatalanoa Australia program’ in Melbourne from December 6th to 9th, 2023. The program included three impactful Talatalanoa sessions held as followed:

Talatalanoa Sessions:
  • Talatalanoa 1: December 6th, 2023 - Tongan Uniting Church, Westside, Melbourne
  • Talatalanoa 2: December 7th, 2023 - Tokaikolo Church, Westside, Melbourne
  • Talatalanoa 3: December 8th, 2023 - Fofo’anga, Melbourne

During the opening remarks, the Honorable Minister, Lord Tu’i’afitu, underscored the importance of land allocation and Tongan freedom according to the constitution. He highlighted the unique land tenure system, emphasizing the significance of land ownership, especially through the "Nofo ‘a Kainga" tradition, which involves inheritance from father to male heir, and the opportunities for widows and daughters within this system.

The results of the discussions during the Talatalanoa sessions were categorized into citizenship status and land ownership in Tonga, land ownership for Tongan women in Australia, and the Ministry's new land processes for Tongans abroad. The Talatalanoa Team effectively addressed concerns, enlightening participants about land rights, including Tongan women’s rights to own land through various means.

Participants expressed gratitude for the Minister's initiative, highlighting the vital role land plays in defining Tongan identity for themselves and future generations. The program encouraged active participation across diverse age groups and genders.

Special thanks were extended to Tasimani Telefoni, First Secretary of Tonga’s High Commission in Australia, and Mrs. Mele Makelesi Kavapalu Facci for their invaluable support in managing logistics during the Talatalanoa Program. Gratitude was also expressed to Rev Viliami ‘Ofahengaue and church leaders for their unwavering support.
