Seismic Network/Stations Upgrade for Tonga
Nuku’alofa, Tonga – The Natural Resources Division of the Ministry of Lands and Natural
Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of MEIDECC- Tonga Meteorological Services, is
undergoing the upgrade of Tonga’s Seismic Network. This initiative is generously funded by
the World Bank through the Pacific Resilience Program (PREP). It symbolizes a united
commitment to strengthening our seismic monitoring capabilities.
The seismic stations or network upgrade involves enhancing and modernizing the
infrastructures that monitor and detect earthquakes, ensuring more accurate and efficient
earthquake-related data collection.
Key Highlights:
- Objective: Aiming to elevate the functionality and reliability of existing seismic
stations through a comprehensive upgrade and maintenance program.
- Seismic Stations: The upgrade will cover five strategically positioned stations at
Nukuhetulu - Tongatapu, Mt Talau- Vava’u, Hihifo- Ha’apai, Niuafo’ou High School-
Niuafo’ou, Hihifo- Niuatoputapu.
